How to make your PowerPoint design stand out

Have you ever wondered what the characteristics of good vs bad presentation design are?

It's a pretty difficult question to answer because many times it is the whole that makes the difference.

But there are principles that will get you a long way. One of them is contrast.

As humans we are naturally drawn to the things that "stand out", be it a person, a building or a webpage. And contrast is what makes items stand out in a PowerPoint presentation.

Luckily, it's pretty simple to use: First you need ask youself, "What is the point of my slide?

When you know, you should emphasize the items that support your point.

Let me give you an example of two slides with the same point: Social media had a great impact on the presidential election in 2008.

What have I done in the second slide?

I've used contrast. First, on the background by making it black to make the chart more dominant. Second, I've made the bar showing Obama's Twitter followers red to emphasize the point of the slide. Finally, I've removed superfluous items like grids and the frame around the graph so it doesn't distract the audience from the point.

How to Escape the Bullets

Have you ever tried reading the newspaper while listening to your spouse talk at the same time?

You either missed a line in the newspaper or from your spouse's talk... unless you are rainman that is.

It's impossible to listen and read at the same time. And guess what bullets force the audience to do? If your audience is reading the points on the screen, they are simultaneously not listening to you, and vice-versa. It is a very inefficient way of getting your message across.

I think you get my point.

We need to get away from the bullets and instead visualize our ideas so they support the story rather than distract it. So how do you convert your bulletized slides into effective ones?

Your Guideline

1. Find the core message of your presentation

2. Evaluate each bullet and slide. Does it support your core message? If not, delete it

3. Batch bullets with the same topic into one slide

4. Take each slide and find visuals that support your point. This could be a picture, a shape or a professional drawing. Do a search on PowerPointing and see if you can find something relevant.
